In 1994 he was an invited composer at the Darmstadt Summer School. And his music has been broadcast on German and Italian radio. Downie was the front man of The Tragically Hip, arguably the nations most beloved rock band. Subsequently his music has been featured in festivals in continental Europe including Nuovi Spazi Musicali, Nuova Consonanza, Musica Scienza, and the Saarbrucken Festival. Since this time, Downie's music has been exclusively instrumental in focus, though it continues to be informed by his earlier researches into the formal specification of creative processes. This period culminated in attendance at the Centre Acanthes workshops with Boulez in Avignon, and research at the Institut de Recherche et coordination acoustique/musique (IRCAM) Paris, both supported by study grants from the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust. He was the lead singer and lyricist for the Canadian rock band.
